I recently wished a friend from the United Kingdom Happy 4th of July, and he replied, tongue in cheek, that he spends the 4th mourning the loss of another colony. We laughed and I passed along my condolences to King George III. In all seriousness, however, the ability to laugh at each others opinions and agree to disagree with each others political foundations is a key freedom, among others, that was earned through many sacrifices in the Revolutionary War. Contrary to King George III’s belief that “anyone that does not agree with me is a traitor and a scoundrel”, we cherish the freedom of expression today as a way of driving meaningful change in America.
What a privilege to live in this great land…….Land of America. Where our founding fathers ( and mothers) were brave enough to risk treason and hanging to develop a land for free thinking, worshiping, freedoms to choose what and who we will be. With these freedoms there comes responsibility. Free agency is the impelling source of the soul’s progress–to grow ,excel to be our best, to press forward with honor. “The sum of all is, if we wold most truly enjoy the gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people; then shall we both deserve and enjoy it. While on the other hand, if we are universally vicious and debauched in our manners, though the form of our Constitution carries the face of the most exalted freedom, we shall in reality be the most abject slaves.” Samuel Adams
Please have a happy and safe 4th of July!!
