Meeting Change “Head On”

Our bodies are constantly turning over old skin and hair cells into new cells, repairing and renewing itself for the better…. IF we do all the right things our bodies need.   In my case,  I have had to change things up a bit to meet the needs of my body.  At times, my hair seemed to be thinning and feeling rather dry and it’s been harder to make it look lively.  As you know I like to keep things on the more natural side and I am still using my favorite hair product, Eufora.  Fortunately Eufora has everything to meet the ever-changing needs of my hair.  By way of experiment, I am now using Eufora’s thickening collection, which with their breakthrough technology, works to improve the health of the scalp and hair follicle  — where healthy hair begins!  Using Pro Amino Peptide complex and Aloe Stem Cell, these two formulations work together to provide an optimum healthy scalp environment to support hair growth.   Other ingredients which nourish, protect and create a healthy scalp include:

  • Butyl Avocadate and 5-Alpha Reductase, which regulate sebum production and keep the hair and scalp system fresh and nourished
  • Neem oil, an antiseptic and antibacterial
  • Co-enzyme Q10, Vitamin C and E, all antioxidants
  • Citrus and Peppermint oil, which stimulate blood flow to the scalp
  • Licorice Root, an anti-inflammatory, anti-itch and anti-flaking solution
  • Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B7 for healthy scalp and hair growth

I have not finished using all the product but the results so far are encouraging.   I have noticed less hair loss while shampooing and brushing, my scalp feels fresh and “tingly” and my hair feels fuller and more lively.

More to come in the weeks that follow on the the results on my little experiment on personal hair care health.

Land of The Free

th

I recently wished a friend from the United Kingdom Happy 4th of July, and he replied, tongue in cheek, that he spends the 4th mourning the loss of another colony.  We laughed and I passed along my condolences to King George III.  In all seriousness, however, the ability to laugh at each others opinions and agree to disagree with each others political foundations is a key freedom, among others, that was earned through many sacrifices in the Revolutionary War.  Contrary to King George III’s belief that “anyone that does not agree with me is a traitor and a scoundrel”, we cherish the freedom of expression today as a way of driving meaningful change in America.

What a privilege to live in this great land…….Land of America.  Where our founding fathers ( and mothers) were brave enough to risk treason and hanging to develop a land for free thinking, worshiping, freedoms to choose what and who we will be.  With these freedoms there comes responsibility.  Free agency is the impelling source of the soul’s progress–to grow ,excel to be our best, to press forward with honor.  “The sum of all is, if we wold most truly enjoy the gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people; then shall we both deserve and enjoy it.  While on the other hand, if we are universally vicious and debauched in our manners, though the form of our Constitution carries the face of the most exalted freedom, we shall in reality be the most abject slaves.”  Samuel Adams

Please have a happy and safe 4th of July!!

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Blooming

As we move from spring to summer the days have become longer allowing us to explore our surroundings.  Recently I had the opportunity to visit Zion National Park.  What a wonder to see such beauty!  Hiking Angel’s Landing was absolutely astounding.  The majestic mountains, waterfalls, streams, and plants blooming in the rocks were all astonishingly beautiful.  As we hiked the trail, we saw nature’s resiliency and tenacity in action; plants and trees fighting for a foot-hold in the rock, just as we were fighting to hold on to the rock!  Nature has a way of showing us how we can live our lives.  Life sometimes brings challenges that seem unbearable, and the way forward is not always obvious; we feel like we are hanging on by a thread.  Another beauty was a cactus in full bloom emerging from the rocks.  Yep, cactus has thorns, but in the midst of those thorns the cactus has beautiful flowers and often times fruit.  I think our challenge is to find the flowers and fruit in spite of our environment, and our challenging times.  Hang on to that thread, because we may not realize the opportunities that lie ahead if we can’t hold on tightly.  I’m grateful for my clients as they share their stories of endurance and survival.  I’m lucky that I can associate a specific and inspiring example of strength and fortitude with each of my clients.  My goal and inspiration is to stretch and to keep focus on the things that are important in life, including service to my clients, love of family, and to bloom where I am planted!

Be Awesome!

Time truly does fly by!  I cannot believe we are approaching spring of 2015 already!  Seems like we just celebrated this New Year and here we are enjoying the beauty of Spring.  Tente Bella Cose!  That is Italian for “May all good things come your way”.  As time moves faster and faster I find myself needing to stop procrastinating and get up and DO, so those good things can come my way.  We all dream of how we want our lives to go in our relationships, health, career, etc. but like John Lennon said  “Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see………..” .  So to have a clearer picture, with no misunderstandings, I guess it’s better to approach each and every day with our eyes wide open.  A good friend of mine says to pay attention, he does a good job of that and he can often say that life is better than he deserves.  It is because his eyes are open and he is paying attention.  But that is not all; he will get up and DO.  Taking the time to know what it is you want in this beautiful life is probably a good place to start, along with being grateful for everything (even challenges because they help us grow).  Having a plan, staying focused (watch your thoughts), being realistic, take time to laugh out loud, enjoying every moment, so we can wake up and be awesome!  For the rest of 2015 my challenge to myself is to be able to wake up and be awesome in every way possible.

May All Good Things Come Your Way!  (And Be Awesome!)

Get Your Glow On And Refine Your Skin This Summer With A Nice Scrub

healthy and glowing skin

In warmer weather or warmer climates we need to exfoliate more often because sweat acts like glue holding down all the dead skin cells, making them harder to leave your face, making the skin look dull.  Sometimes those old cells stick around longer then they should.  Removing dead skin cells help create healthy, smooth, supple skin.  Exfoliation assist the renewing and replenishing process of new skin.  A lot of us push this step aside but it will make a glowing difference on your skin.

Oily or combination skin can exfoliate 4 to 5 times a week, dry or sensitive skin can exfoliate 1 or 2 times a week.

There are some gentle scrubs you can create at home using baking soda, powered milk, oatmeal, and honey.  Here are a few of my favorite recipes for a scrub:

1/2 t. baking soda, 1 pump of Eufora’s Beautifying Serum, 1 pea size Eufora’s  Pure Cleanse Shampoo.  Mix together making a paste.  After you cleanse your skin apply scrub to damp skin and in a circular motion.  Not much pressure is needed, let the scrub do it’s job with gentle pressure.  Splash with warm water and apply moisturizer.  Enjoy the silky feel.

1 c. lightly packed brown sugar, 1/2 c. ground oats, 3 T. oil of your choice (sunflower, jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed), 2 T. honey,2 T. vegetable glycerin, 3-4 vitamin E capsules (opened and squeezed).  Gently massage onto skin.  Rinse with warm water.  Pat dry.

Make sure to date your product and use within 1 month.

Protect your Hair from Sun Damage

summersun

Here in sunny Tucson, we sure enjoy our warm sunny days. I could not see myself in a cloudy environment. Sun protection should happen year round, but this time of year when the sun is so intense, we could take extra precautions to prevent damage to our hair and skin. Remembering our hats, light long-sleeve shirts, and sunscreen helps protect or skin. The hat helps protect the hair as well.

There are some wonderful tools for the hair from Eufora: Hydration Leave-In Conditioner, Sculpture Styling Gel, and Elevate Hair Spray are good for sun protection. Applying Hydration Leave-In Conditioner before a swim will also prevent excess chlorine from getting in the hair shaft. Studies show that with unprotected UV exposure, the scales pull away from the hair shaft, which makes hair brittle. These styling aids and conditioners will help coat the hair and give it some protection.

Be careful with cheap sunblock products on your face because they usually contain PABA. The cinnamates and salicylates, which absorb in the top layers of the skin and become oxidized by UV, creating a chemical reaction that can irritate the skin. Try a sunblock with titanium dioxide as an active ingredient. This is a natural mineral that forms a barrier between the sun and your skin.

Enjoy your carefree summer days! Come on into Bella Mente Studio for an urgent repair conditioning treatment, which will put moisture into your hair and revitalize your scalp. This summer, I am offering this treatment to my clients for just $25. I will style your hair with Eufora Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner and Sculpture Styling Gel for added UV protection!

Exuberance is Beauty

happy-woman-2-620x360

Hoping everyone enjoyed a safe Memorial Day. I hope you were able to take time to honor those who put their lives on the line to preserve our great country and the freedoms we enjoy. I also hope that you were able to spend time with family, friends, and loved ones enjoying some good food, a good laugh or two, a new experience, or an old old tradition of simply enjoying life. I hope that the enjoyment could be seen all over your face, smiling eyes, and the sound of laughter. As the poet William Black wrote, “Exuberance is Beauty.” Your radiant beauty — beauty from the inside out.

Tapping into the fountain of youth

nerium-ad-logo-300x99

We are all trying to tap into the fountain of youth one way or another. Diet, exercise, drinking lots of water, even going under the doctor’s knife. I don’t mind a little pain before the beauty comes…like a good hard workout at the gym.  But under the knife — I’m not so sure. That’s why I have chosen exercise, diet, water, and NeriumAD to help me with the fountain of youth.  I have used NeriumAD for a year now and have noticed some nice benefits. The wrinkles on my chest are gone, my face feels soft and supple, some firming on the goul, and softening of wrinkles.

Nerium offers scientifically tested and proven products that stand out in the skincare market. Nerium’s products have been researched and developed according to ultra-high standards. Nerium’s one-of-a-kind, science-based skincare products started with research on Nerium oleander, an evergreen shrub that grows in many subtropical and tropical regions around the world. The extract from Nerium oleander has been found to have many age-defying properties for the skin.

The exclusive NAE-8 extract was formulated after more than 10 years of research and clinical testing by scientists and medical professionals. The company’s product, NeriumAD Age-Defying Treatment, was the first skincare product formulated from this revolutionary extract. NeriumAD has been proven to dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration through the powerful antioxidant properties of the NAE-8 extract.

Nerium AD users love the natural approach and manufacturing philosophy of Nerium International. The Nerium philosophy is to use the power of botanical plants and natural ingredients that aren’t harsh and that don’t include fillers and harmful ingredients. 5 Foods to Boost Your Mood

kale

Everyone has things that make them happy in life, and for me, food is one if them.  I have found that eating raw, natural, unprocessed foods helps me feel energized in mind, body, and spirit.

5 Foods to Boost Your Mood

Kale
This leafy, green veggie is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Kale is loaded with phytonutrients that help our brains and folate, a vitamin often used to treat depression. And Kale isn’t just for salads anymore. You can enjoy crispy kale chips, add it to a smoothie, or even bake it into brownies!
Seafood
Seafood is great brain food. It is loaded with omega-3 fats, essentials fats for many bodily functions. It also provides B-12, selenium, and DHEA, which are vital for a healthy, happy brain. Fish is a great main course item, but there are also many ways to integrate it into your diet in snacks and appetizers to diversify your palate.
Nuts
Nuts have a great reputation as heart-healthy sources of antioxidants and healthy fats. Research shows that just an ounce a day can improve physical and mental health. Almonds, pecans, and walnuts contain calcium, which can offset hormonal imbalances in women as well as alleviating symptoms of anxiety such as depression, irritability, and impaired memory. Nuts have also been linked to higher serotonin levels, which make you feel calmer and happier. No matter how you work them into your diet, you really can’t go wrong with nuts.
Beans
Beans are a versatile and affordable way to keep your healthy eating on track. Beans are laded with iron, a mineral that boosts your mood and energy levels. They’re also filled with phytonutrients, which ward off disease and help the body function properly. Beans are a rich source of antioxidants. A half cup of red beans has 1 1/2 times the antioxidants of a cup of blueberries. Whether you sprinkle them on your salad, eat them in a Mexican dish or make a dip, there are countless ways to enjoy beans.
Eggs
Eggs are no longer just a great way to start the day. Eggs deliver B-12, folate, protein and heart-healthy fat – all of which are critical in terms of brain function. Egg yolks are packed with carotenoids, which have been linked to optimism by recent Harvard studies. There are so many ways to enjoy eggs…scrambled, poached, in a smoothie, or over your favorite salad.

Healthy food nourishes body and spirit!

Fritters2

I believe in and enjoy eating healthy.  I think we feel and think better when our bodies are nourished with whole foods that taste and look good.

Cauliflower and Cumin Fritters with Lime Yogurt
Serves 4

Lime Sauce

1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro
Grated zest of 1 lime
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt and freshly ground pepper

Fritters
1 small cauliflower
Scant 1 cup all-purpose flower
3 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley plus a few extra leaves for garnish
1 clove garlic, crushed
4 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

2 cups sunflower oil for frying

To make the lime sauce, put all the sauce ingredients in a bowl and whisk well. Taste – looking for a vibrant, tart, citrusy flavor – and adjust the seasoning. Chill and leave out for up to an hour.

To prepare the cauliflower, trim off any leaves and use a small knife to divide the cauliflower into little florets. Add them to a large pan of boiling, salted water and simmer for 15 minutes until very soft. Drain into a colander.

While the cauliflower is cooking, put the flour, chopped parsley, garlic, shallots, eggs, spices, salt, and pepper into a bowl and whisk together to make a batter. When the mixture is smooth and homogenous, add the warm cauliflower. Mix to break down the cauliflower into the batter.

Pour the sunflower oil into a  wide pan to a depth of 2/3 of an inch, and place over high heat. When it is very hot, carefully spoon in generous portions of the cauliflower mixture, 3 tablespoons per fritter. Take care with the hot oil! Space the fritters apart with a fish slicer, making sure they are not overcrowded. Fry in small batches, controlling the oil temperatures so the fritters cook but do not burn. They should take about 2-4 minutes on each side.

Remove from the pan and drain well on a few layers of paper towels. Serve with the sauce on the side.

Live Life on Purpose

serene-woman

In Jack Canfield’s book, Key to Living the Law of Attraction, he shares the simple secret for living a life filled with meaning and purpose. Live life on purpose. Live consciously. Do not withhold your gifts and talents from the world, and fill your life with purpose and intention. I love this idea and see the difference it makes in my life and in my clients’ lives each day.

I am blessed to love my work and my clients. Work is meant to be fun, and each of us was put on this earth for a reason…which is to experience true happiness, abundance, and success. Every day, I wake up with this thought in mind:

Create a life filled with passion and significance
Create a life of purpose
Follow your bliss
